I have a 05 Rinker 212 R1 with 5.0L Volva Penta GXI with SX drive. The boat has approximately 465hrs and has been meticulously maintained. However, I recently have developed a periodic value knocking sound.  Havent yet figured out exactly what is causing it but at times the boat runs like a sewing machine and sounds perfect.  At others, when coming off plane, you can hear the motor making a tick tick tick sound.  It comes and goes. I dont seem to be losing any horsepower or torque.  I dont understand what is exactly occuring.  Any suggestions on what to do or look for.  I really do not want to take it to the dealer at this time enless it becomes an absolute must.  From what I have heard they are 3 weeks behind and im not ready to give that up this time of year. Open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks,
Aaron

Sounds like you need to troubleshoot the engine.  You may have to get the engine manual.

Look at your e-mail....page 20 of the pdf. file attached

Sound like your lifters are ticking.  Are you running correct oil viscosity.  30W Synthetic?  Have you had your valves adjusted?  If you are running 10w or thinner oil this will happen quite often.  Al

Lifters ticking is very possible. Yes I am running 30W Synthetic Mobil 1. I have not had my valves adjusted. Does that help at all?

This is the oil I used

Big dog,  Change that Oil asap!!!!!   The oil is your problem  You have a synthetic 0 w oil with 30wlubricating propetys.   Again change that oil asap!!!!    The oil you have are for small automotive engines.   Volvo calls for strait 30W synthetic.   If you can not find straith 30w synthetic  use a sustatute oil of 15W40 synthetic blend.  you can find at NAPA   Al

Change Noted... and changed the oil ASAP, went back to my dealer and got the Volvo Branded oil and a new filter. Now do I have to worry about any damage. That lighter oil has maybe 15hrs of run time on it, mostly pulling wakeboarders, engine only lifter knocked when coming from full throttle back down to idle (no wake zone) otherwise no knocking.

Could be a pulley (bearing), given the amount of hours.

It's possible you're just hearing the exhaust flappers inside the risers....sometimes ours make that sound- it can make you think it's valve train noise.  Ours will make the noise at idle speeds but no trace of it past 800 rpm.
