Me new Rinker 310 has done 20hrs. The Mercruiser manual says it needs engine oil and filter change only.

The local Mercruiser dealer in Singapore is say otherwise.  They are saying it also needs all elec connections checking, grease up all points, replace oil and fuel filter, spray anti-corrosion to project engine.
The basis is that as the boat is kept on the water, much of the stuff is to protect it.  We are now discussing if warranty is still valid by following the manual!
The manual has a rather basic lube up for the 50hr service and many things at 100hrs.

Interested in experience as this is my first boat.  The broker says the Mercruiser guys are being over the top!
Thanks

I had a 20 and a 40 hour check up, where the volvo tech came and changed oil, filter and lubed things...he also sprayed and checked everything, including the electrical stuff....

There should be a list written down for you, stating what needs to be done, and at how many hours....  It should be by the engine manufacturer, not the dealer....

Hi. The manual from Mercruiser says only oil and filter. The work recommended is by the official engine representative in Singapore.  His list is bigger.  Interestingly he is pushing for the high priced option also!

Since your boat is new, it would probably be good to spend the extra$$ for the 20Hrs check up aside from change oil/filters.  My suggestion is to be there when its done and try to see what work/checks he is doing, and have him check if there is any small amount of saltwater leaking in the cooling lines as these will be potentially harmful a few years down the road....have it rectified if so by tightening the clamps or sealant...whatever he suggest....

From then on, it may be up to you whether to continue regular expensive check ups or do it yourself....the key to a long lasting boat to to keep the engine compartment on the dry side...no water leaks...especially raw water leaks from the hoses....if ever a leak occurs, it should be thoroughly cleaned with fresh water...and if your not the type to do it yourself, have it done by dealer or reputable shop...

When mine was new, I had the engine oil/filters changed and had the drives pulled, checked and serviced.  I still do that once a year at the time of winterization.  Since you probably don't winterize, now is as good a time as any.

Hi All,

Thanks. In the end we went for the full hit, but I still find it odd that the manufacturer recommends a certain scope but the local dealer ignores this.  I will not be able to dedicate time to oversea the work, nor will I be able to do the work my self any time.  Having to work even harder now to pay for the boat and the servicing  wink
