Hey need alittle help I just bought my first boat (2005 captiva 232) I bought it at a marina one week ago. They took me out for a test drive which we had no problems. Today planned a family trip out put her in the water makin my way down the river when I got into sufficient depth i lowered the drive all the way, prior to that it was not even halfway up. After lowering it I didn't go another 100 yds and I got and alarm looked down to find the temp at about 230 degrees. Needless to say I shut the motor down and after limping it back to the dock which was only about 500 yds away I loaded it up. I called the place I bought it and he asked my if the drive had been all the way up cause it wouldnt get water flow, but the it was almost completely down but even if it had not have been the drive is totally submerged when it is all the way up. After telling him it had been down he said oh well u must have sucked a ice bag or something around the drive? Anyway I stopped to another marina on the way home they hooked up a hose to it and said the water pump is shot. Is there anything else I need to look for and are his assumptions correct?

It sounds like the water pump impeller to me.  It could have been ready to crumble when you were idling down the river, then broke apart when you rev'ed her up.  That is not a real serious issue and not too unusual.  Sorry it spoiled your maiden voyage.

I doubt that the water pump is "shot" - Most likely it's the water pump impellor. You didn't mention what engine / out drive you have but if it's a Mercruiser Bravo 3, then the sea water pickup pump impellor is where to start and it's located low on the starboard side of the engine.
If you have an Alpha 1 drive the sea water pickup pump is in the lower unit.

Seawater pickup pump impellors should be changed out at least every 3rd season (or sooner if in very silty water).

I'd agree, almost certainly the impeller, if you had originals they were due.  I change mine every 3 years, cheap insurance.  When they go, it's 'sudden' just like you had happen.

A good suggestion for you would be to get a maintenace log for your boat.  West marine and others have them, just a note book, but organized.  You can list replacement parts as you get them for future use and then log in all your maintenance/repairs.  It's nice for noting when you changed water pump impellers, spark plgs, etc.

It is the sea water pump impeller. I always change the whole pump (pump & housing) because if you bring in a bunch of mud and or silt it will sandpaper your impeller and housing. It cost more but a rough housing can ruin a new impeller.

Good to hear that's all it was.  & welcome to the forum! thumbsup  In no time we'll all have you replacing and maintaining what you need to keep your ride running good.  The impeller is fairly simple, but the easiest method is to remove the entire pump and then change out the impeller.  Three years is definitely the max you want to go.  I learned the hard way on a prior boat and had to replace an engine.

Welcome aboard. thumbsup
