Well, after a near 100 degree weekend my gen got quite the work out and quiton me.  Turns out it was just the impellor of whivh I had a spare and replaced.  Here is the problem.  I had four of the blades break loose from the old one. two of them I found lodged in the pump and removed.  No sign of the other two. :(  I put it back together and it seems to be running great.  Shold I rip apart the heat exchange and find the bits or just run it and hope some how cycles thru?

My opinion - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Odds are that the pieces went out to the muffler and probably overboard. I just replaced the impellor on my Kohler last week. Mine lost 2 of the impellor blades but they were still in the pump. If the peices of your impellor were small enough to pass through your pump, you are probably fine. As you already know, your generator will shutdown before it over heats.

I had a discussion about my Kohler 5e with the service place in WI about this very issue.  Typically the parts will stay in the heat exchanger.  I was told if you remove the hose from the out put side of the heat exchanger and crank it the exhaust pressure will blow them out.  You will get wet!  With that note, I just left it alone.  Complete PITA to do that.

I'd let it go too.
I had an interseting problem at season's start. I'd run the kohler and within 3 minutes under load the engine would buck and cough then up and quit. It would restart only for a couple of seconds. Drained the carb, cleaned the carb, changed all the filters, blew out the lines and still had the problem. I looked down in my spares kit and saw a couple of new spark plugs. Said what the hey and installed them. Genset ran like a champ! Who would think that spark plugs would both fail simultaneously when they warmed up? Thanksfor reminding me though, I need to order spare impellors and plugs.
