. . . . . Dreamin' of Summer

« on: July 22, 2010, 09:41:37 AM »

A few weeks ago I noticed very minimal barnacle growth on my drive. Yesterday I dove again and it has spread like wild fire!! Before launching I did spray with the Trilux 33 anti-foul so I am a bit surprised of this. I plan on diving today and scraping them off but my question is what can I do short of hauling out to eliminate the barnacles? I think once I scrape them off I will be leaving bare metal which will surely be attached very quickly.

Thanks!   pirate

Look for paint with Copper. There are many marine pAINT
articles on your issue. Important to be specific for your boating
region, see what others are using.

Are you snorkeling or scuba to fix it?
I found this for me. It's not for drives but for hulls and somewhat informative. Hope it helps.

Yeah I'm snorkling. Not fortunate enough to own scuba gear but perhaps that's a new idea for Santa ! thumbsup thumbsup

As if barnacles weren't enough ..... while snorkling with my boys during a little break from all the scraping, my youngest age 5 got stung by a huge jelly fish! Never had any experience with this so were at the hospital getting checked out.  sad

OMG!  You're the one for luck!  I just read that in NH 150 people got stung by a dead one as big as a trash can cover.

While we were diving in the Keys, my daughter got hit with Sea Lice and we squirted vinegar on her but the stings (neamtocysts) lasted for about 2 weeks on and off.  We had to give her anti-histamines.

You can read more aout it on the DAN (diver alert network) under medicine.

It tougher with young kids.  Best luck.

I have never been stung nor know anyone who has been before today. Although I am glad to report he is perfectly fine now, it certainly wasn't a fun time! I am going to try and get him back in the water tomorrow so he doesn't get scared and not want to go back in.  shades

Thanks raybo! I am not sure the size this thing was but it was damn big! I took a quick look at it as I ran out of the water to grab my son and I would say it was prob a good 14 or so inches. It was red and had long~ass tenticles. It stung my son about an inch to the left and to the right of his family jewels and also on both feet. My poor little man has some nice battle wounds by his jimmy!! He was very lucky he didn't get it there!!!

I have heard from a few old salts that adding cayenne pepper to your anti foul paint will keep the barnacles away. If this is true I came up with an idea of putting some chili peppers in a thin cheese cloth and attaching it to my drive and trim tabs when the boat will sit for any period of time. Any thoughts?

Sounds like an urban legend to me. It's the copper content in your bottom paint the keeps growies off - the copper leachs out and kills growies when they attach.

What about all these new anti-foul paints that are copper free?  scratch head

They use an environmentally friendly biocide that leaches out of the paint. From what I’ve read, it’s very similar to how copper works only the biocide is supposed to be less harmful than the copper once it gets into the water. The leaching effect occurs all the time, even when there are no growies to kill.

The waters being this warm this year is causing them to grow like crazy.  I have been scraping them off weekly now.  My bottom paint is fine.  Its the trim tabs/drives that are painted that are getting attacked.
