Hi all.. I am looking at purchasing a 1996 captiva 192 w/4.3-alpha 1... Hours on the boat are unkown... This will be my first I/O boat, previous boats have all been OB's... I have been told to listen to the gimble bearing, raise the lower unit up to look at the bellows, make sure Y pipe is not leaking water, cycle the steering L-R, make sure it shifts smooth... anything else I should look for... the boat overall is in pretty decent shape, the vinyl is coming off of the dash, and the engine bay lift strut is broke off... let the wealth of RINKER knowledge flow, Im listening.... watching

with ours i had to replace all the plywood seat structures as these rotted to the point of saggy seats and a rear sundeck i would put even a cooler on as it might fall through. not a hard job, just a consuming one. thumbsup

Go for a ride in it before buying it.  Set up a time and place to meet, get there early to be sure you see the boat go in the water, if trailered  That way the seller isn't there an hour before you pumping the engine full of starting fluid to get it to run and warm up prior to your arrival.  Crank her hard right and left while listening for a grumbling noise while underway.  Do that at different speeds but be safe doing it.  Check to be sure all switches operate exactly what they are supposed to, check that all lights work, pumps, horn, etc.  Good luck with your potential purchase.

i would open up the ski compartment and see if there is mold or a moldy smell in there.. if there is probably a good chance his drain tube from the compartment is clogged... mine did this.

How did you fix the drain tube?  There's always a bit of water in mine I can't seem to get out.  Thanks.

I took a wire coat hanger and stuck it in the hole under and in front of the engine while running a hose in the drain hole in the ski compartment.. with a lot of prodding and moving the hanger around it finally opened up.. lots of sand and crap in there.. just make sure the front of the boat is elevated up a few feet.. this really let it drain out nice!

Did you end up buying this boat? I have 1994 192 with the 4.3. just wondered if you had any issues or what not? I've been looking for a dash for mine..
