The original clarion speakers were literally dust and the cones were crumbling.

That's exactly what mine did.  I have never seen a speakers cone deteriorate so badly and before the foam surround.  i just assumed they (the people I bought the boat from) had washed the boat with bleach and got some in the speakers.
I replace them with the Polk's last year.  They sound great, but I did have to replace one of them this spring.  It was distorting and I couldn't find anything visibly wrong with it.  Luckily i had an extra pair in my closet just sitting around, so I have one more back up speaker.

I believe the pre-wired remote runs to the transom for the clarion remote.

Good info, thanks. thumbsup  When I get a chance I'll pull up my boat cover and check that out.  It does makes sense that they would run it back to the swim platform.
What doesn't make sense to me is why boat makers put the damn stereo on the other side of the boat in the first place. bang head  I wouldn't have gone through all this trouble if I could just reach down and turn the volume down. scratch head

If you look under the fiberblass right in that area in the engine compartment you'll see a large plug which I believe is the other end of the wire you're talking about.

BINGO  That's it!  I found mine dangling in that waisted space.  Mystery solved, thanks. clapping
That might  even be an easier place to attached the RTF. grin

I think I want to get the wired remote & mount it at the helm.

After I figured out that the M455 did not have a wireless remote as an option, I looked into the wired remotes.  The cheapest controller was about $100 bucks then you have to buy the cable for another $30.  Add shipping on that. huh
After much web surfing I found this neat little remote.  It's water proof, floats and you can be up to 125ft away and change channel.  You could be on your floaty and turn up the volume. grin
After they respond to a question i had, I will probably order one.

It has a receiver that plugs into your hub controller's 6 pin plug.  So there is still hope for me to have a wireless remote.  thumbsup

Just an FYI.  You can pause your Sirius subscription for the winter months and restart again in the summer.

Did you have to alter the factory opening in order to get the Polk 6.5's to fit?  I'm looking into doing the same thing for my 232.

You may have to drill new mounting holes but the large opening should be fine.  I've done a 192 and a 226 without any issues.
