First time naming (size and lettering)

All,

This is my first time naming a boat. A few questions for everyone. What size should the "name" letters be? How wide should the name be (I have a rinker 300). i know the home port name is 3" bbut should I think of anything else?  Anyplace anybody suggests to purchase ?

Have them painted. Get some advise from boat shops who to use

If you have a documented boat the 3" rule applies to the home port only. Non-documented boat
I don't beleive there is any rules, at least not in Californis.
Check out the Boatus web site  Boatus.net. On the left side of home page is a
menue with boat lettering which you can design yourself. I bought my boat name decal
from them and is looks really good. Also was real easy to put on.

Definitely helps! Thanks. The boat will be documented so I do have to follow the USCG regs. I have been looking at the various sites for designs. I think i am going with the 3" for the home port but how big should the name be? 8"  I know this is probably a matter of taste and some safety (see it from farther) but curious on some opinions.  I like the painting idea but I think i want a cheaper option at first to make sure i know what i like. Hate to paint then think... hmm...  don't like that... :)   I think once i have something on for a year I will probably paint.

go to google and type funky monkey. They enable you to try different fonts and colours/shadows etc to see what you would like.  Won't help with the sizing as thsi really depends, as you say, on taste and on the space available.  There is no max limit and, as far as I know, no min limit since a name is not compulsary.  You can also order stickers from Funky Monkey, although I have not done so.  But dead easy to try different fonts etc

If you are pretty handy with computers and have some knowledge of using photo editing software, you can do what I did:
I bought my boat new during the Winter and went to the dealership, took measurments of the stern where I wanted to have the name placed and then took several pictures of the stern. Then I did a search for Fonts on the internet, copied a bunch to my hard drive and then used them in one of my editing programs to create the name and then copy / paste the name onto the stern pictures that I had taken. It took a bit of time but it was well worth it as I was able to try out many different fonts, different boat names, curves, etc. and the picked the one I liked best, printed it out and gave it to the dealer to make and install.
