The chrome on my 2005 270 FV steering wheel needs to be cleaned up. I have used a few mild chrome cleaners, with no luck. I am concerned about using an aggressive polish as I think I'll cut through the surface. The surface almost looks like is is covered with hardwater stains. I am in freshwater or I'd say it looks like dried salt water.

The only other option is replacing the steering wheel. My guess is Rinker would charge an arm and a leg.

Any thoughts?

The steering wheel, water tap in the galley and some other shiny parts on mine were fading so I cleaned them up last summer. I used Turtlewax Silver Chrome. It's supposed to work on chrome, aluminium and most other shinies. Sure did the trick for me, but it's no miracle substance so if the oxidation has eaten deep into the surface it won't fix that, but at least it'll clean it up and bring back the shine.

The steering wheel used on my 232 appears to be a parts-bin part, I found an identical design at a nearby car/boating/everyday stuff retailer. Same materials, same shape and I think the same mounting holes as well. Only thing that's custom to my boat seems to be the center trim with the Rinker logo. So you might be able to find your steering wheel somewhere for not much $$$, too - worth a look.
