fuel gauge sending unit

my 310 starboard fuel gage dont work,i was wondering if anybody ever changed their sending unit.i heard you have to pull the moter,thanks

I have replace several of these sending units in 310's. You do not need to pull the motor, What would this even help with? The sending unit is located in the corners of the tanks. In some instances you may need to drill an access hole in the storage tube just above the sending unit. The sending units can be seen and tested from the motor compartment. Al

My sending unit is going bad as well. I can access it by removing the storage bin under the seat in my 232cc. The question I have for Al is do you know which sending unit i would use as a replacement? There are 2 that I see that might work. One is a 6" to 12" unit and the other is a 4" to 27" unit. Of course the 6-12 is sold out on iBoats.com.

You can test the sending unit by removing the wire attached to the sending unit at the tank and ground or touch to the tank itself. If the needle on the gauge goes to full, the sending unit is registering properly. If it does not move it could also indicate the wire has been severed between the tank and the guage.

Frodo, I might be wrong but I think your test only checks the gauge and its circuit not the sending unit. Now if the gauge has some reading other that empty or full most likely the sender works but could be inacurate or have "dead" spots in it. Good luck, Eric

hey alswagg,can you be more specific in the drilling of the hole to get to sending unit,i dont have boat nearby to look till this weekend,as long as i can find the sending unit i no what to do after that,i really havnt looked for them yet but wanted to get as much info as i can so when i go to boat i no what to look for and do when i get there. thanks

For future reference, in a 232cc, you need an 8" sending unit. I pulled mine out yesterday and measured the inside of the tank. I had to order a universal 6" to 12" unit. I believe that you cut it to size. I'll find out when it gets here.

I installed a universal fit in my 1996 232 some time ago. You do cut/adjust them for proper tank depth. Just for the hell of it though play with it wired up prior to installing it in the tank. Depending on how it's adjusted you can set it up to be more accurate than the OEM sender. My original one seemed to be set up to where the first half tank lasted all day then that last half tank of fuel dissappeared in no time. Never liked that. Read the directions that come with it then TWEAK it. You'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the advice Dale. I am going to have to mess with it before I put it in. Mine goes to empty really fast, but when you fill up it won't take the full 75 gallons. I don't run the tank dry, but I don't like it when you think that the thing is on empty, you put gas in it and find out that you still have 20 gallons in the tank. I guess that can be a good thing, but now I know that I can be on empty and run for a while. I would rather the gauge be a little more accurate.

I replaced the sending unit in my 232cc today. I discovered that the original sending unit was an inch shorter than it was supposed to be. I guess it was good that it was short so I had a reserve, but when you have 20 gallons of reserve on a 75 gallon tank, it is rather frustrating.
The original one was showing empty when I started. The new one showed close to 1/3rd of a tank. That was a pleasant surprise for me when I went to fill the thing up today. It only took 47 gallons.
