I usually run inside as you don't save much time running the ocean.  Also, going the ocean route, you would most likely run to the Moriches inlet which can be nasty and not considered a navigable inlet.  If you go to the Fire Island inlet, that would take you too far west and you'd have to come back east to hit Fire Island.  The run inside is well marked and not that difficult other than the Moriches bay just north of the inlet by the Moriches Coast Guard Station.  That is scheduled for dredging this spring so it may not be a problem. If you run it at high tide its not too difficult anyway.  Also, if you run inside, a stop at West Hampton Beach Marina is always a must on my list as its such a great place.  As for Fire Island, Watch Hill is a very popular place, although the mosquitos can get out of hand at dusk.  Flynns at Ocean Bay Park is nice. Davis Park also very nice.  Sailors Haven  also nice.  Kismet nice, but no water or electric.  Ocean Beach is the largest community on F.I., but only water, no electric and no overnight stays.  There are other places I can't think of at the moment, but if you let me know what type of places you are looking for I'm sure I'll think of some more.

Awesome! We will be making the trip to FI this Summer for sure. As long as I can plan it right and run inside at high tide I think we would be fine. We would like to make it a nice 3-4 day trip so to have a nice place to dock with electric and water would be great. We will have our 5 and 8 year olds with us some fun things  for them to do and some nice shops for the admiral is a must for me to be a happy man. All I need is to wash my boat down so she is nice and shiny, my blender in full throttle and then a nice sandy beach to chill on.    cool

Let me know if you are doing FI - that's an easy shot for me.

I mapped it out and it looks like a nice and easy 55 - 60 mile trip for us up the Peconic, through the channels and over to FI. We will be doing this trip this Summer for sure. Not 100% on the date yet but I would say most likely sometime in Late June or Early July.

For some reason I was thinking the trip from Montauk Point to the Block was 30 miles but is actually just 15 miles. That I can do! We will be making the trip to the Block this Summer. i will be adding my JRC Radar to the 270 and a better GPS/Chartplotter to make life a little easier!

Sounds like a good plan.  Bring the fishing poles.  Good fishing out there.

Around the north fork, through the locks and over... But I've heard some things that would make me leery of the Moriches Inlet and maybe shoot for the FI Inlet... Depends on where you're going I guess - and if they dredge it like was stated in the thread.
