The Stingray hydrofoil on my 212 BR is very faded. It appears as if the previous owner waxed or did not remove all of the wax. Has anyone resolved this issue or painted their hydrofoil. Thanks.

Does anyone have one of these hydrofoils?

I have one on my outboard.  Go ahead scuff it and paint it.  Can't hurt.

Looks better. I'll find out in the spring whether or not this was a good idea.

Hi ,

Do these fins work? , I used to have a 14ft Fletcher powered by a 55hp Suzuki outboard fitted with a similar device and it worked well. My current boat is a Captive 182 br fitted with a Mercruiser four pot 135hp engine. I have only recently bought this boat which is fitted with a laser 2  14x19 prop. Whilst lightly loaded and trimmed right in she struggles to grip the water and runs bow up until she hits planing speed . I was wondering if these fins might help by raising the stern quicker, but I have read reports of some boats porpoising with them fitted or even chine walking with some hulls.

Your guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Steve

Stevie,
I used hydrofoils on a 18' Maxum with a 85HP Force outboard and on a 21' Marada with a 225HP V8 with Volvo SX drive.  In both cases the boats planed more quickly, cornered better with no cavitation even in sharp high-speed turns.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one as a low cost means of helping a boat plane out more quickly.
Good luck!  thumbsup

Thanks Dan,

I've done some research and they are available in the UK, so I may try them.

Steve,

I am new to boating and wouldn't be able to offer much guidance, however, a friend of mine has the same boat [212 BR] and he says that mine planes faster and corners tighter.

I have one of these installed on my Rinker 180 and love it.  The only issue is that unless you are a trimming god, your top speed is effected a bit.  But unless you whip around at 40mph all the time, this addition is the best bang for the buck I have ever spent.  I plane much faster, and I do not porpoise anymore.  Cornering with a tube is highly effected, not nearly as much bog down anymore.  Also, do not paint it, just go buy a new one, they are only $50 new!

I have been thinking about adding a hydro foil to my 270 FV 350 MAG to help get her on plane. Any one have a larger/heavier boat and use a hydro foil?

I don't know if it will fit around the drive.  The slot isn't very wide.  I suppose one could modify it a bit but you may compromise it's strength.

Stevie W....Yes hydrofoils do really work. I had a 2000 Rinker 232 with the Alpha 1 stern drive and used the Stingray XRIII. This required no drilling and uses the big anode under the outdrive to hold it in place. I even had it come off once (lost the anode) but the hydrofoil floated long enough for me to turn around and retrieve it. I've heard others complain they don't float but mine did.

The performance difference was amazing. I could run my 232 on plane at 21 mph at about 2400 rpm with the motor trimmed to about 3/4's. This was in fuel economy cruise mode. It also helped with getting the boat out of the water pulling 3 tubes and several people on board. I had the 5.7 EFI motor (260 hp) and the extra advantage for fuel economy and performance was worth the cost (approx $150).
