. . . . . Dreamin' of Summer

« on: September 24, 2009, 01:36:44 PM »

Thought this topic deserved it's own thread.
in summary ~ I just bought my buddies 2003 270 FV with 2 large cracks in the radar arch (see below).

I spoke with a Rinker rep last Friday who was very helpful. I emailed him these photos late yesterday and this is the email he just sent me (note less than a 24 hour response time!).

"I asked the company that built this and they said it looks like a early version without a drain hole at the bottom. We found out some times moisture sill form on the inside and it will run to the bottom and freeze, and this can crack it out. They recommend a small hole to be drilled at the lowest point so moisture can get out. As for the repair they told me the same thing I told you. It will need to have the bondo removed back far enough so the section can be welded, then re-bondoed and then painted."

Hope this helps,

Dave

So far one of the best companies I have had the pleasure of dealing with. this says a ton about the Rinker Boat Company and it's staff and products!

They've had numerous similar problems with that arch (mine included). Try getting them to pay for repairs...not!  bang head

Water got pretty deep in there to freeze and crack it that high up.  Drill some weep holes in it and be sure to reseal whatever they have mounted on top of it.  I am thinking I'll drill some holes in mine before winter layup.

you need to drill the hole about 2 1/2 inch up from the bottom,  the arch tube has a solid section in the bottom.  I use a 3/16" drill bit, counter sink the hole and hand paint.  Allan

Question on drilling:

Where did you drill.  At the back curve (or radius) of the arch, along the side?

thanks

I'll be looking to drill the rear side of the arch.

Does anyone would be able to send a picture or a drawing that would show where to pierce the hole. I do not want to screw everyting up. I have a FV 270 2004 and I don't know if I will get the same problem. Do you know if they solved the problem in 2004??

THANKS VERY MUCH

I drill the holes on the back curve of the radius.  In the main tube assy.  Not very noticable once repainted.   If you are in salt water make sure you repaint the area to compate corrosion.  Allan
