out drive leg hitting sundeck on 250

Hi all I need to know if any body has had the same problem as me and what was the outcome. I had myrinker 250 (2005 model) lifted out of the water last week to be transported but before i could put it on the lifting straps i was told to trim the leg right up. So judging that the wheel was striaght i trimmed it up till it stopped, so when lifting it on the water i had a look under neath as you do and found the leg was'nt straight when i trimmed it up, it hit the the underneath of the sundeck stringers and snapped the top of the exsaust port by an inch. The leg is a volvo duo prop unit i rang my local dealer who was supprised as i was that it hit the deck and said he's never heard of any thing like that before, the deck is a factory fitted one as well!! The leg is being repaired free of charge thank god, just i wanted to know if any body has had the same problem and how was it resolved did you have to pay or did rinker say no chance!!!! To me it's a design fault which should have some stop switch to stop the leg going all the way up.

Your outdrive (Not Sure about Volvo) should have a Trim indicator and a trim limit switch they are located on each side of the outdrive. If the limiter is not adjusted correctly you can have the problem your having.
Now since it sounds like it is out of adjustment I would also make damn sure they check your drive shaft and bellows including the exhaust bellows. The reason, if it lifted too far it could have pulled the bellows from there seating, and miss-aligend the drive. (Could Happen) which inturn will cause water to get in you drive shaft and your boat. Sinking it!
I would ask them to re-adjust the limit switch (If Volvo use them like Mercruiser) and check EVERYTHING over!
Let us know what happens.

I have a fv250 with Merc and there isn't any problem...doesn't even come close. Does it hit if the drive is straight? I agree that this seems very strange.
Good luck

the good thing is that it's in for a service for the engine and leg so they will be checking every thing, but as for the limit switch the gauge showed it coming to the top which was my indicator of when to stop the leg. But as regards if is set correctly i think it came from rinker as is, the dealer told me that not many of these boats are transported on trailers here in the uk so triming the leg right up has never been an issue. I'm not to worried as the dealer said he'll rectify the problem at no charge to me, he has said he's on to rinker in the usa to see if there is an issue with the leg going to high and hitting the platform. I was just curious as to if anybody else has had the same problem

Very odd. I'd agree with Boatrule. Sounds like the limit switch is outtawack (the technical term). I'd pay close attention to the bellows seals and have them re-align the drive when they remount it.

If you are removing the drive, it would be wise to check the engine alignment as well.
