I want to change the gear oil in my 232 Bravo 3 and use synthetic such as Royal Purple or Mobil 1.  I have used Royal Purple before in a go fast boat (29' Fountain with twin outdrives) with good results but was wondering if synthetics are recommended or can be used in the Bravo 3.

Can't speak for the Bravo 3's, but know synth is recommended for the Penta drives..

Is the merc OEM lube Synthetic or Synthetic Blend...I think it may be blend, so you're probably ok to step up to full synthetic...

Be sure to use a marine approved oil. My understanding is they include an emulsfier to help with any water that may get in the oil during the season.

I believe Royal Purple is rated marine grade.  It states on their website it is recommended for marine use.

I guess the question is: do you still have a warranty?.. if so I wouldn't go with anything but Merc Lubes. If you don't have a warranty, the world is your oyster.. thumbsup

In my opinion I think the best thing you can do for a B3 drive is put a drive shower on it.  I love them and protection is relatively cheap.  Here's the ones I use:  www.driveshowers.com

No warranty so I am O.K. there.

Does anyone know how many quarts the Bravo 3 holds?  I could not tell from the manual, it states 96 but 96 what?  If it is oz's that would equal 6 quarts and that seems like a lot for an outdrive.

Rowdie, probably just the winter blues dulling the senses, but 96oz is 3 quarts or 6 pints.  I would think that 3 quarts sounds about right.

Yep, brain freeze here...back to school for me!  32 oz's in a quart and 16 oz's in a pint.  3 quarts sound about right.  It's been a long winter or i'm getting too old to remember.

Blame the winter, not the age.  At least you're in Texas, I'm stuck with Chicago weather.

Yep, it will take the better part of 3 quarts (but not all of it).  Unless this is a racing application, use Merc lube in a Merc drive and Volvo lube in a volvo drive.

You are correct. It took just shy of 3 quarts. I did replace with RP synthetic gear oil so we'll see if it performs as well in the Bravo 3 as it did in my Bravo 2.
