I have replaced the sea water  impeller on a volvo before and it is a very easy repair even for the mechanically challanged.  I am not sure about how difficult it will be to get to.  Normally it can be changed in about an hour.  I would agree that tit would take three hours if you consider getting the part, tools etc.

I would get another estimate.  As this seem out of line.  Of course this is without seeing how difficult it might be to get to it.  It would be easier to determine if we could see a picture of the area.

Possibly even (Deep Breath) cut a bit of the floor to make room! I had to do this to replace the fuel sending unit. Was no big deal, it was hidden by the engine cover and I just resealed the open floor then wrapped the carpet around that and re glued it. Looks fine.

Nope it's in the engine compartment and is covered with the carpet that extends into that. Looks factory.Which should have been from the start! but hey, Rinker has come a longggg way since 1991! thumbsup

So I crawled into the engine compartment to try to get my hands on this thing(impossible from the top) and I can touch it but can't see it at the same time! I estimate from water pump to gas tank at 3".

My 282 cc w/496 was no picnic    just enough room to unbolt the pump assy  & remove it to replace the impeller
just enough room between the engine & bulkhead to squeeze the serp. belt through

I own an '06 250EC with a Merc and yes the sea water pump is very difficult to access.  My mechanic charged me $245, but said next time it will be a little more as he had to remove the manifold to get to the pump.  He said he was even thinking of removing the engine as it was about the same time as taking out the manifold.  He said figure another $100 or $200 next time.  $1000 to do this job is a absurd.  I would look for another mechanic.

I think that is the definitive answer there.

$1000 estimate sounds as if the mechanic isn't interested in doing the work
