I am completing my winterization of the boat and I want to change the impeller on the gen.  Where should I be looking at?  This is my first winter with the boat.  The manuals I have dont seem to show where I should be looking.

Which model generator do you have? Most people recommend replacing the impellers in the spring, so they don't "take a set" over the winter.

Good suggestion. Being a procrastinator I like the idea of waiting till the spring. Should all the impellers be routinely replaced or do they have an hour/season lifespan?

I have a Kohler 5kw model if that helps and good idea to wait until spring too.

I've been told that the lifespan is "about three seasons" depending on use, and the recommendation is to change every two.  I don't use my genny that much, but for all I know that makes it more likely to break a blade off the impeller when you *do* use it.  So I'll be doing all of mine this spring...

I have *generally* found that you will get about 100 hours out of an impeller. That said, I went through 4 this year. Always carry a spare - it's a 10 minute fix.

well, it doesn't look like anyone has told you "where" it is yet.  Looking at it from the front, it is on the right side.  You take off the sound shield, front and side.  It is behind a small cover that has 4 bolts holding it.  Can be a little bit tight getting it back in.  Hopefully it isn't in such a tight area like mine. bang head

Thanks, Even though I didn't ask the question, I was waiting for the answer. I'll make sure I have the spare impellers (engine + gen) but also the wrench to get the covers off. are there gaskets too?

Dream Inn, I will look in that area tomorrow if I get a chance that gives me more of an idea.  Thanks.

There is one gasket that comes with the impeller,  just replaced mine about a month ago.  I didn't have no vasaline so I put a little carmex on the viens and slipped it in.  Just make sure you have the viens going in the same direction as the old one.

Actually, replacing the gen impeller is fairly simple as compared to the engine itself.  We don't have a sound sheild so it's pretty easy.

BTW....I had one heck of a time finding a replacement impeller when I needed one back a few years ago.  I was in Holland Michigan, and called every marina, West Marine, and anywhere else I could think of....no one had a replacement.

I had to drive to Grand Rapids to a shop to get one....and of course....buy two so you have a spare!

FYI:
I have a Kohler 5ECD 5 Kw generator on my 2008 320. There are some differences in the older generators but I think that all of the major components are located in the same spot.
The sea water pump is easily located by following the sea water pick up hose (#20) into the generator.........

A lucky visitor to Holland, MI!  My home port.  I found most parts for the Kohler Generator are not easy to find.  I have a spare impeller and plugs with me, they eat plugs.  You can save yourself a lot of money on the oil filters..it's the same one used on the lawnmower Kohler engines..and they only make one filter :)

Justin, I relpaced the impeller this spring after purchasing my 2005 320. Kohler parts are easy to get. But first I would suggest logging onto Kohlers web site and getting their manual for the 5E/4EF/7.3/6EF. It is the same for all of them. The manual is very complete in the ins and outs of repairs and maintenance as well as part numbers. You can also find a local distributor on their web site. My dealer in Jersey drop ships the next day and stocks all of the Kohler parts. I can scan some info and email it to you if need be. Good Luck1 pirate
