It's pretty much stuck in the up position.  Trim button seems to work, and I can here it powering from the engine compartment when I press it, but no movement from the drive.  I checked the fluids and they are good to go.

It's sitting in my driveway right now.  Now what?

I always look for the simplest thing first, try exercising that switch in case its stuck open, its a push button, so it may be just stuck in one position, #-o  #-o Art

Possibly a dumb question.....

If the switch was stuck in position wouldn't the pump in the engine compartment keep running?

Yes , but what if it was stuck open and when pushing in the down direction wasn't making contact. I not sure but the switch we are talking about is a momentary contact, located on the throttle. Its something cheap to check before big money items.   Art

Gotcha.  I did what I could do as far as troubleshooting.  I dropped it off to the mercruiser dealer and they think it might be a relay.

Thanks for help.  I'll update when I find out more.

Apparently the drive was locked in the up position for some reason that I can't understand.  They had to bleed the pressure out to get it to come down, and said it was wired wrong from the beginning.  Supposedly this will keep happening if I raise the drive up too far, but it is able to run.  However, if I want if fixed correctly, I have to take it to the dealer, so they can do the warranty work.  Hour each way through construction to get it to the dealer.  Ten minutes to the place I just had it at.

Why can't an authorized mercruiser dealer do warranty work even if I didn't buy the boat from them?  I realize what the obvious answer might be here.  Is it different from car dealers, say chevy, that I can't take my chevy to any dealer in america to have warranty work done?  Maybe I misunderstood what the warranty all entails.

Interesting and I'm sure frustrating problem. Let us know what your dealer has to say about the problem.  I have to trim all the way up to trailer. Was it stuck in the trailering position?
Good luck.

It was stuck in the trailering position.

This is the note I am to pass on to the dealer from the mechanic.

"Checked fuses.  Then checked for power at solenoid, no power.  Traced wires and found them not connected right.  Motor would run then but not go down.  Bled pressure from rams and drive would go down and up.  If you hold trim button up after drive stops drive gets stuck.  Once you releave some pressure it works fine.  Recommending they take it back to place of purchase for warranty."

You would think if it goes up and down after it is bled off then it is surely wired correctly. I wonder if it could be a valve or hydraulic problem of some sorts.

Red Rocket, any certified mercruiser dealer can do your warranty work. The problem is they usually do not get paid their shop rate. Mercruiser tells them what they will get paid for the repair. So the place you took it to may not want to deal with the hassle.
I have been through this with my boat (2007 246cc) one hour fifteen minutes to my dealer. Plus I will never do buisness with them again.
If you add up your time plus gas you might just be better off paying for the repair at the dealer you like. Good luck, Eric

Hey red rocket, I checked the mercrusier site and found this on the drive switches.

Replacing Your Trim Limit and Trim Position Senders
Alpha's and Bravo's have two Trim Senders.
They are mounted on either side of the Gimbal Ring.
One sender is for the Trim Gauge and the other sender is for the Trim Limit.
The Trim Limit Switch is mounted on the port side and the Trim Position Switch is mounted on the starboard side.

The switches are prone to damage from water intrusion. Water enters the switch and ruins the contacts. The wires tend to soften and/or rot with age and water leaks into the switch through the wires.

This is why the new switches are sold with the new wires are already attached at the factory. Always replace the wires when replacing the switches.

Symptoms
The Trim Position Switch operates the Trim Gauge.
When the Trim Position Switch fails, the gauge usually pegs to "full up".

The Trim Limit Switch prevents the driver from 'over-trimming" the outdrive while under way.
It is an important limiting feature which prevents damage to the drive and/or loss of control of the vessel.
Trimming the drive unit up too high while the boat is running can cause serious damage and/or injury.
When this switch fails, the TRIM BUTTON does not work. Only the TRAILER BUTTON will work.

I don't know where you took your boat but there is a place called heritage in Joliet. They deal with Mercruiser all the time. I have bought parts from them and many people have recommended them for work. The place is a dump but I heard they do good work.

I'm taking it to a mercruiser dealer who has done work for me before.  I would have taken it there in the first place, but the other place was only ten minutes away and also a mercruiser dealer.  Only problem being, it doesn't go in until sometime saturday-monday.  I'm using my dealer as a last resort, because if I have to haul it there everytime for something, I don't need a boat.
