Prop Question:

I own a 2000 Rinker 192 Captiva.  It has the 5.0 V8 Merc, and has been awsome.  I am currently running a 19 prop.  It has been fine, until a minor problem yesterday.  I was trying to get a 6'2 240 lb guy up on skis.  I have got people this size up before, but they were experienced.  Anyway, he just drug.  If I had a just a little more snap, I think he would have got up.  I was suggested to try a 17 prop.  What do you guys think?

If you're not concerned with speed then I would think the 17 pitch would definately do the trick.  Going to an 18 pitch would probably do the trick.  Having said all that, you need to keep an eye on your rpm's.  I am running a 209 Captiva with the 5.0 and a 19 pitch 3 blade aluminum.  My 5.0 has a 2 barrel carb and the recomended rpm's at WOT (wide open throttle) is 4200-4600.  I say all this because with my set up which is very similar to yours I am running at about 4400-4500 rpm's at WOT.  Decreasing prop pitch WILL increase engine rpm's.  I wouldn't want to be running at the max of the manufacturers range.  If you don't already know what your rpm's are at WOT I would recomend taking the boat out before a prop change just to know for certain where you're at.  Good luck, are you going stainless?  I want to pick up a stainless 19.

I just put on a 14.25 x 18" Precision Props Turbo 2+2TH 4-blade stainless thinking it was close enough to the stock aluminum 14.25 x 19".  Recommended WOT range is 4200 to 4600 RPM.  The boat instantly planes and pulls like a freight train but I'm seeing 5200 RPM......not good at all....and only 40 mph!  My next try will be a 22".

Just installed an XPII Hydrofoil yesterday - performance has been amazing.....I'd try installing one of these to see if that helps - I'm running a 19 pitch high five stainless - I can plane at 2600 rpm and am on plane within a few seconds with half the required power.....porposing is gone......world of difference......

I have pretty much the same boat and i run a 17p stainless 3 blade and a Hydrofoil Whale Tail, I have no problems pulling up skiers with this prop, but like everyone has been saying you do sacrifice top end speed for more holeshot.   with this prop my top end speed is around 45-47 mph and i can easily hit the rev limiter (4800 rpms)
