I just bought a 05 232BR and am looking at adding a subwoofer to the sound system.  I have seen some others online that have a factory looking sub under the rear bench. (RX package?)  If anyone has any info on it, I would appreciate it........  Does it sound good?  Does it run off an external amp? What kind of woofer is in there, what kind of finish does the enclosure have have? Is the box ported or sealed?

I will proably make my own enclosure and choose my own woofer unless the factory one is easy to get and sounds good (for an open air boat) and at a decent price.

Anyone with experience would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Marc

Different boats, but here is my opinion.

I checked out a 246 R package the other day at the dealer and the sub is located on the inside wall next to where the cooler fits.  There is no box.  It is open air.  There is an amp, but I couldn't find it.  I did not have a chance to hear it, but I am sure it would be an upgrade over anything without a sub.  I do not have the sub in my 246BR, and although it could probably use one, it would probably be too loud.  With that said, I don't doubt I will get the urge sometime.

I put two of these in my last boat(FV 270).  It was absurd how much bass these subs can produce without a true box.  It was overkill to be honest.  One would have been plenty.  I powered the two of them with a JL amp as well, but I can't remember which one off hand.

My 06 246BR has the sub mounted open air next to the cooler compartment. The boat came with a Clarion system that f-ing rocks. I believe the 450 watt amp is behind a panel next to the head door.
As far as placement for your boat I wouldn't recommend using a box. I've had both and if you can find a place to mount vertically and dry, the open air uses the whole hull as a box.

Marc
We just bought a new 08 246 BR and I had to spend some time figuring out the radio system.  After reading the ouners manual and talking to my very helpful dealer I was able to get the system sounding great.  We ordered the premium sound package witch includes upgraded speaker through out, a Clarion APX 4240 amp. and a Clarion 10" sub mounted on the port side of the rear cooler compartment.  It is open air and a little vulnerable to storage item contact in the seat compartment.  The amp is mounted behind the port side appolsertry coushion right beside the passenger seat. You have to remove the cushion and then remove the cup holder enclosure to access the amp. Not convinent but diffinitly out of the way. There are several setting on the amp that help improve the sound and difinitly enhance the bass.  I know nothing about amps and subs etc. I do know what I like to hear in sound reperduction and this system does it for sure.  She has the cover on her now but I will be uncovering her this afternoon and can get the numbers off the sub if you'd like.  Good luck and have fun.
Here is the link to the amp ouners manual.

I have a 232BR, and have often considered the same thing.  I ended up reusing an old 8" bazooka tub in the closet.  I had to take the door frame off to get it to fit in there (extra security).

It sound adequate, maybe Ill look for a 2nd tub someday... Please keep us posted on your project.

Thanks for the replies.
I think the infinite baffle would be a great idea, because I would not lose any storage (which is lacking), but I am a little unsure about cutting a hole in my boat.

Does anyone have any pics of one installed?

I will take some pics this weekend while at the lake. I cut the holes under the rear seat cushion. I have a 2000 232 in which I installed 2 10 inch subs in. Im not real sure what the new rinkers look like but maybe mine will give you ideas.

I just finished installing 2 12" Kicker cvr subwoofers(marine ready) in my 1997 232br. I lined the inside compartment of the back seat storage with about 3/4" of fiberglass to make a good sealed box. Installed a jl audio marine amp and bought tinned power and speaker wire from knuconceptz.com. Spent $120 for the subs, $120 for the amp(used), and ~$60 on the wiring. The setup sounds amazing!!! Now if the Illinois river water level will just go down so i can enjoy them!!!

morrisdl,
That is the one I have seen.  Is that on your boat?
If so,....
 how does it sound?
Is it a box or just a baffle that mounts in there for a free air subwoofer?
is it an 8" woofer?
Is the amp inside that area or mounted elsewhere.
Any idea who makes the woofer?

Any other subwoofer install pics from others out ther would be appreciated!!

Sorry, not my boat.  Mine's yellow.  I should have specified that " I found the picture" on google.  I would also like to know the answer to your questions.

I saw your boat from the wakeboard speaker post. Nice touches.  Mine is the same yellow.

I am going to pull out that storage compartment and see what is back there.  I am most likely going to mount a free air subwoofer in it if there is room.

I see from your sig that you have an 8" subwoofer. Can you tell me about that set up?

I have an old 8" bazooka from a previous car stereo install that I put in the storage closet.  It only fits in (or out) if you remove the door frame - added security.  It definitely adds a lot to the weak sony speakers, but I would really only call it adequate at best.

I do see they sell a marine version in white or this 'camouflaged' one:
