Hey Steve,

I’ve never really been a big fan of Progressive.  Don’t forget to try with companies like BOAT US and NBOA, who shop insurance carriers that specialize in boats for the best deal they can find for you, and be very leery of companies that do not specialize in boats, as they often leave out valuable coverage like spill protection, and environmental impact protection (when the government fines you for the gas and oil pollution caused by your boat that just sunk).  As for referrals, try this lady at EM Power Insurance.

Tell her you got her information from SpeedWake "dot" Com.   She has apparently been saving a lot of guys with high performance boats a lot of money on their insurance.

I’ve also heard good things about Global Marine Insurance

I went through Bay Agency out of Rumson NJ, got a good deal on a Zurich Master Mariner policy.  Much cheaper than the Progressive quote was (or Allstate for that matter).  You might want to give it a try.

I have Progressive currently on mine (although a considerably lower value boat than the majority of owners here), and have been happy so far. With that said I'm all for saving some money. The $57/month isn't terribly expensive I don't think, but less is better assuming the same coverage.

I've had progressive for years on my trucks, and have been happy with the claims service when needed in the past.

Mike, you might want to check around.  It's hard to say what you should be paying or compare (since you are in a different area, different age, different boat), but you are paying basically the same rate I am...I'm with BoatUS.

Mike, I agree with Dream 'Inn, we had a 2004 22' Stingray insured for $30K for about $50/month.  We used Allied Insurance for that one.

Steve328is - For my current Rinker 370 (and my prior 320), I'm using Old United Casualty.  Their rates are very competitive for an agreed value policy.

PS, what year is your 328is?  I drive a 2002 330Ci.

Yea I figured it was expensive. My record isn't exactly spotless, and my credit isn't exactly great either, I'm sure that impacts it some. Progressive was somewhere I could go get a policy, and print out cards that night to bring it home. Just haven't taken the time to switch or look around elsewhere yet.

I've been with Boat US for about 15 years no problem here but I heard they had some issues with Kitrina

I've tooted about how great Florida is and especially the weather down here during the winter.

However . . .

It is damn near impossible to obtain boat insurance on anything larger than a 30' boat.

I tried ALL the obvious insurers, BoatUS, Progressive, etc., and each and every one of them said they don't write policies in south Florida for boats above 30'.

I finally ended up with State Farm and am paying a tremendous fee but they are only insuring me because I have my home, all my autos, motorcycle insured with them.  They flat out told me that had I not been insured with them for ALL the other stuff, I would not have been afforded the insurance.

My 2 cents anyway.

In my area here in Illinois, I am with Erie Insurance very competitive.  I know they are in IN, OH, PA, VA, MD for those of you east of IL.

In Florida, my premium was $4700 payable in full on the spot.

Just to give anyone an idea.

By the way, I don't have any claims, tickets, etc.

Hop,

As another Florida boater....I hear ya.  Depending on your cruising habits, US Insurance have pretty competitive rates in Florida.  The issue with them, is they only give a 50mile range off the coast of the US.  They consider the Keys to be part of the coast, so you are covered for that, but the Bahamas at 56 miles out would not be in their covered area.

I did not go with them because of the above issue with the Bahamas, but the quote I got from them was very competitive.

Thanks guys for all the input!

Dan & Darci - the 328is  is exactly what you were thinking!  We used to own 1996 328is BMW.  Miss it, but not the 5 and dime it was doing to us at the end. Next one will be a new one w/ warranty or a real old one to restore... like a 2002.

We had to get insurance ASAP... went with Progressive. $419 a year.  Would like to have gotten the $50 a month....or know what that covers.

Maybe we got too much coverage...
50/100/25 on liablity, uninsured boater and only one driver for primary. This was for an agreed value. With a $500 ded.  Think $419 in FL is reasonable?

What is really necessary out there.  I don't want to take chances... but don't want have coverage for what we really don't need either.

Um - $50 a month is $600 a year - I think you got a better deal - unless I misunderstood...
