Rob, I agree with George.  From all I hear, Stone Harbor seems to have one of the best reputations.  Give them a call and explain your situation and how long you've been dealing with it.  Don't give up, a good outcome can still happen. :)

Well finally got some news.  The mechanic finally took the drive apart and called Volvo.  Volvo has agreed to send me a whole new drive.  Figures now that I booked a week vacation to Florida next week (couldn't take it anymore).

I have also requested the mechanic to prime and paint the drive and to bill Volvo since I just spent $100 on paint to paint the defective drive.  I guess I should expect the bill in reality.

Maybe Memorial Day weekend.  Of course I have a Christening on Memorial Day weekend Sunday and I have to work the following weekend.  What is the point of a boat again?  This boat will be for sale once I clean it up.

Rob, sorry to hear about the bad timing -- would've been nice had the mechanic opened things up earlier.  Also sorry to hear you're going to give up the boat anyway -- looked like things might have been turning for the better...

Well, it's good to hear Volvo is finally stepping up to the plate.  I know it's been an issue for a while...but it seems like persistence has paid off.  Hopefully a little time on the boat in the next couple months will change your mind on selling it  .  Good luck either way.

Boat is finally back in the water.  Took it for a little ride yesterday as well.  So far so good.

Volvo did not cover the whole cost of the repairs.  Still will not have another Volvo engine if I have a choice again.

we have a 2005 270 Rinker and we have had nothing but problems with the volvo ocean series.  Has the boat 2 months and had to get towed as they said we sucked up sand in the engine.  Had a new motor replace last May 06 as a rod broke.  Had a new engine put in Apr 07 as 2 pistons blew.  Mechanic also said we had seaweed in the engine.  I feel like we need to put this boat in a bathtub so we don't get anything else in the engine.  Still with the mechanic as we supposedly now need a new water pupm and heat exchanger.  Anyone else with these kind a of problems.

Wow -- what type of sea strainers do you have on it?

Are you running the boat through the Everglades???

Sorry to hear about the Vovlo problems.... More people on this forum complain about volvo's than Mecr owners... that's for sure... But there are also many volvo owners that rave about the setup....

Susan, you may want to get another mechanics opinion and a deeper dive into what's causing the problems. Sand in the fresh water loop shouldn't cause the kind of damage you've experienced. At worst it might grind up the impeller and cause overheating, which if all systems are working correctly should shut down or degrade the motor. Which motor do you have, 5.7, 8.2? What is the normal operating temperature when cruising? Good to hear Volvo is replacing the motors but it must be a pain for you.

We are having a different mechanic look at it now.  We run the boat in the intercoastal or out inthe Gulf of Mexico in Fl.  We have other friends with us all the time and they don't have any problems.  the outdrive has the water intake valves at the bottom instead of the sides and they say that with this ocean serices that we will always have problems,  We like the Rinker but not the volvo.. We do have a 5 year warrenty on the engine.  I'm not sure if we didn't have that would the company replace it.  Any one else with type of engine having this problem??

Susan,

I had a problem with the lower drive on my Volvo 5.0.  The casing cracked and I lost reverse.

To make matters worse, I needed the boat the next weekend for the annual air and sea show in Ft Lauderdale.

Davey Marine, my dealer, took care of everything toute'd suite and Volvo shipped the drive in two days and Davey Marine installed it the next day.

I haven't had problems since.

Push-come-to-shove, talk to Davey Marine and ask for Mario.  Great guy!!

Regards,
