First weekend out and I had to be towed in.....Embarassing!!

As some of you already know from my previous post I just bought a brand new 07 Rinker 250 last Thursday. I'm out cruising on the intercoastal in the Clearwater, FL area. I start to feel a vibration coming from the back of the boat and the engine quits. So I first think that I got some seaweed or something that got caught in the prop. Come to find out the outdrive was clean! ok....so I start her back up and on I go. The vibration didn't seem to be there but as time went on it got really bad and was making a loud whining noise and then a bad burning smell. I immediately stopped the boat and then it just stalled and the gear was stuck in forward. I opened the enging hatch and looked back towards the transom only to find a green fluid leaking all over. As I sourced the origin I saw that the tube that comes from the gear lube resevoir became disconnected from the gear lube tube coming from the outdrive. SO....needless to say the outdrive was no longer getting the gear lube. When I got back to the marina, the mecahnic there took a quick look and found that the tube coming from the outdrive was continually getting pulled from the steering mechianism and eventually disconnected from the tube that came from the resevoir.
Now for the second issue (same day)..........I keep the boat stored in a dry storage, so it's pulled out everytime I come back in from a trip. I found that the left trip tab broke. The pin that connects the plate to the hydraulic mechanism broke!!! WTF?!?!?
I really love this boat and am very disappointed with what happened on my first trip out!!! I will be at the dealership's service center tomorrow morning to have them fix this ASAP!! I have a feeling that the out drive will need to be replaced.
What do you all think????

I'm in the same area you are and I'm looking at Rinkers as well. What dealer did you buy your boat from? I'm just curious and I'm looking forward for the results you get from Rinker and the dealer.

Yeah - I would raise the flag pretty quick - as for the pin - sounds like it may have taken a blow somehow (possibly the lift out) and I believe the pins are designed to break free as ot not cause more damage...

There's absolutely no excuse for that to happen. At the very least the dealer should have caught that prior to delivery - not to mention that Rinker shouldn't have shipped it that way. I'd be embarrassed & pissed as well!
I agree with cyberlectic on the tab - I'll bet it got broken on the lift out.
Now is when you'll find out what kind of dealer you've got.

Yeah, I'd definitely raise the flag about the gear lube. As far as the trim tab...is this something that could've happened due to leaving the tabs down when you were lifted out of the water?
I'm sure Rinker will come thru for you...here's wishing you much better days to come on the water!

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. My 07 280EC came with tabs that raise automaticly when the engine is switched off. If you dry store you might want to check into adding this feature if your 250 is not eqippped with it.

yeah 05 270's also have the auto tabs. but they do still hang back there a bit. the 250 would be the biggest boat I would have lifted by far

I agree with everybody else - the tab probably got broken on the lift out. Get with the dealer ASAP - They should have caught that prior to delivery. Everybody makes mistakes - let's just hope they stand by the product. Don't worry, The rinker is a solid boat and you'll be fine after you get this behind you.

Hey everyone....thank you for your comments. Well I got the boat to the service department and they told me that the upper drive unit was shot, due to the lack of oil getting to the drive unit. He also told me that the gear lube resevoir had some sort of a blockage in the bottom of it. Anyway, the service manager has been great and is fixing the trim tab for me and getting a brand new outdrive(upper and lower) to replace the bad one. Hopefully he'll be done with it by Thursday.

Hi devilrays,
I got mine from Sunray Marine in Holiday, FL
http://www.sunraymarine.com/
. It's off of Hwy 19 about 3 miles (or so) south oy Hwy 54. They have been great...it was a very pleasant buying experience and now a very good service experience. When I told the service manager about my problem, he had someone 10 minutes later going to the marina to get the boat and bring it back to the shop. I would definately recommend them if you are looking to buy a new Rinker. If you go see them...ask for Bill Delaney (727) 942-7221 and tell him that I (Phil Nader) referred you. Good luck!
Phil

Glad to hear a happy ending to your maiden voyage....
And it really makes me glad that i bought a Rinker as everyone speaks so well of the manufactures reputation of service.. I wonder if the folks at Rinker monitor this forum????

I think it's safe to say that they are aware of the site and check in on it from time to time.

Phil (07RINKER250).....
I am going to contact your guy at Sunray Marine........we are starting to look to go bigger, and I have to say our dealer is horrendous. One issue after another with them, and the kicker has been their seeming to lack any desire to build long-term, repeat relationships with their customers.
The service department has been great with warranty items, etc., but the sales & business side of the dealership is a mess.
