I have a 2005 FV 320 with 5.0 mercs. Today I was out and was running fine at 4000 RPM when my starboard side engine started to lose power. It kept on fluctuating  up and down but wouldn't get above 3000 rpm. When I tried to increase power above 3000 rpm it became worse and would stutter. It ran for about an hour like that till I got back to the dock. No problem at idle or slow speed it seem to run fine. Any suggestions on where to start looking .

Well today I was talking to my dock neighbor on the phone and he had the same problem last year they put in new plugs, wires, rotor, shop was baffeled they called Mercruiser and they told them to change the oil there is some kind of sensor on the crank. IT RAN FINE AFTER THAT, now I've never heard this before but he has no reason to lie about it. He's one those Mobil 1 guys that believe that stuff is forever, I change oil every fall no matter how many hours. Like I said this is what I was told I'm sure someone will chime in here on this. I even did a Google search on this with no luck. But this friend of mine has spent $900. bucks fixing this and it turns out to be dirty oil he's kickin' him self in the ass.

Some of the GM cars have that same sensor. Warns the driver to change the oil in the dash. Protects the engine from failure.

I had similar problem, turned out to be fuel water separator filters.

Turned out to be the fuel  water seperator. It was full of water . Change the filter and it ran perfectly.
Thanks for the suggestions.
