HI All,
About to purchase a 1998 280 FV.  She's got twin fuel injected 5.7Ls's with 305hrs.  She's super clean and I can steal her for 18-19K.  Just a few questions.

1.  What would be cruising speed and max speed with those engines?  (alpha drives)
2.  Any idea on fuel economy of those engines?
3.  Anything that should be of concern with this vintage boat?

It seems like you're all very knowledgeable here and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

WW

Welcome and good luck.

I have a 95 280 have had it for 6 years. Love it and you will enjoy it I am sure.
Mine has 305-180 2 brl carbs hard to comp[are but I have had her at 38mph and she will cruise at 22to 25mph.
As to fuel I cant compare the 2, but remember it is a boat and they like fuel.

Im hoping to get a top speed of 40+ and hopefully somewhere around 12-14gph burn at cruise.  I hope Im being realistic with these expectations.

Dmags555. You are looking at a boat that can have the engines electronically scanned to verify the engine hour meters. DO IT so you know what you are getting. Not sure what drives the boat may have but if they are Bravo III there has been corrosion issues so be careful. Spend the money and get a survey from a qualified person. It will be the best money you may ever spend.

I just sold a '86 Formula F28 PC last summer. Twin 350's, Alpha drives, 15" x 17" props..... Top speed around 45-47 MPH, she would cruise all day long at around 30 MPH. You can count on 1 MPG at cruise. I hope this helps you.

P.S. Any money spent on fuel means you're having fun as compared to paying the boatyard.

Here is a fuel comparison to help.  My 320 twin vp 270's 5.0's.  Burn a total of 24 per hour or 1.15 per mile at 30 mph.  My guess on the boat you are looking at would be 18-20 gph or 1.75 gpm.  The boat is slighly lighter and the 5.7's if 320 hp go don't work as hard as 5.0's, hence the better fuel consumption.

I agree with LG.  Your fuel burn will probably be 18-20mph with a cruise around 28-30mph.  The alpa drives aren't quite as efficient as the B-III and don't give quite as good a hole shot.  But, for that size boat, with twins, you will have plenty of both hole shot and top end.  I had a 24' that was 4300lbs dry (pretty heavy) that I used to slalom ski behind without any issues.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your purchase!

HI folks,
Thanks for all of the good information.  They are Alpha drives.  Actually having a survey done over the next few weeks, weather permitting.  Will keep you posted on the findings.  Thanks again!
