Hi everybody. We have a 2006 Rinker 280 EC with a 350 hp Volvo Penta gas engine. The engine proved to be rather small for the boat and too fuel consuming, so we are considering swapping it for a Volvo Penta D4 260 (or would you recommend 280hp?) hp diesel engine. We do quite a lot of cruising in Greece, we are normally 4-6 people aboard and the boat is quite loaded at times. We are not looking for super cruising speeds, but we would like the boat to have a cruising speed of 28-30 knots at under 4000 rpm and the ability to handle medium high waves without falling off plane. Would this engine be a good choice, or would you recommend something larger? Thanks for any feedback.

Hi Eleni,

We have a 280EC with the D4 260 engine.
We are completely satisfied about this engine in combination with the boat.
Cruising speed around 48 kmph at 3000 rpm's and fuel consumption than around 33 - 35 litres per hour.
Max speed 63 kmph with fuel consumption than at 52 litres per hour.
Slow speed (10 - 12 kmph at 1000 rpm's) with consumption of only 2 litres per hour.
In general, over the year we make between 150 - 200 hours (now 4 seasons with 600 hours total) and an average consumption of 7 - 8 litres per hour! (and we use cruising speed and also WOT at least once a day as our favorite area is 25 km from our harbour).
Also the sound is very good, for sure not noisy.
Mostly we are with 2 - 4 persons at the boat, but even with 6 adults and 2 kids we have no problem to come into plane (only than we need to trim the engine completely in and the plates completely out for the first few metres).

Love your area, we dream about the Greek waters (especially 2011 was in Holland terrible summer, spring and autumn Ok but summer wet, cold, dark, so only few hours cry).
Keep us informed.

Hans

Personally I would be concerned about the return on investment (ROI.) I bet the cost of replacing the petrol engine with diesel is expensive and it might be better financially if you just sold the boat as-is and then buy a diesel equipped boat. Of course I understand you may love the boat and have a sentimental attachment to it. In that case ROI is not a factor. Also, resale values in Europe may be stronger that here in the U.S. where used boat prices are very soft.

Losing 70 hp should hurt performance, although I know diesels have more torque. Hans reports very good performance and economy, so his experience is enlightening. Diesel fuel is cheaper than petrol in Europe I understand. Another significant benefit is better SAFETY due to the vastly reduced potential for explosions.

If you go ahead with the swap, be sure to keep us posted!
