I store my boat outside in the winter and used moth balls last year and had no issues but they stink real bad.

Is there something I can use that smells better but still as effective?

Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets.  Just lay them all around inside the boat.  Keeps rodents away and smells great in the spring.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
