not saying the person i bought my 2005 212 captiva with a 350 mpi motor didn't ALWAYS take care of the boat but,.... todays started to close down the boat for winter, change oil #1 on my list; drained oil out, closed oil drain added oil, change filter....... 3hrs later finally got what was left of the filter off. locked solid to the adapter plate. no filter wrench worked, wouldn't budge, tried the screwdriver through the body, now there's 2 pieces, chisel and hammer, close but no.... then removed everything from boat put it on my work bench, torch and chisel and hammer, a couple of burns, cuts and one sore thumb and finally it came loose. anybody have this happen? i'm thinking the filter has been on for a while, not new this spring like i was told. wow what a day. bang head

I had the same issues last year. Getting pulled today, so we'll see what kind of fun I'm going to have. I used a large set of channel locks and 2 people to get the filter off.

You should have had the inverted filter assy.  The prior owner probably wiped clean the filter base and did not lube the O ring on the filter.   Or it was an original filter as you mentioned.  What color was the filter, and what brand?  The OEM NEW filter is black with Red printing, Mercruiser.

Oh man, that does not sound like fun.  I actually thought my wrench was at the boat and it wasn't when I went to change the oil.  Luckily I was able to change both filters with my bare hands.  One was pretty tough, but got it off.  Like Al said, either it wasn't lubed, or not changed for a while.  (or put on with a wrench bang head)

Filter removal is always a bear to do. It was most likely torqued down too much when installed. I only install it hand tight and make sure you have lots of oil on that gasket. I use a filter wench that is a large channel locks. Here's a link to the type I use with great success.

Hey Dream bare hands.....wow better not mess with you.... ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL

ROFL  Yeah, it is kind of funny!  At the time I had no other source (could not find the stinkin wrench and had everything all set to go).  One was somewhat simple, but the other took about a half dozen times and a red face. pirate....but I agree with others that the lube on the gasket is important.  I'm sure that is what helped me out. (cause my wife says I'm now "IN my 40's")

it was a mercruiser stock filter and there was no sign of any oil on it and i need to get a new filter wrench, the original one i had had a small bend in the handle but after i tried it, the handle now reaches all the way around the filter. just a little bent!!! ROFL oiled up the new one and should be good to go, but i may try once a month to turn it and retighten it!  ROFL

Ok, I guess I should've never mentioned it. ROFL  I will say with the wrench (yes, all but this year), I've never had issues.  I really think the key is using oil on the gasket and tightening it only by hand.

I use a K-D filter wrench, with a  pivoting handle.  The wrench must be 15 to 20 years old.  I suspect has removed well over a 1000, closer to probably 5,000 filters.  Both oil and fuel.    One thing I did when it was new was to peen several points into the band.  I am guessing 12 points in spaced 90* apart in groups of 3.  This is a high quality wrench, which has paid for itself soooooooo many times.   Al
