I'm going to deal with my trim sending issues this off season...IF the sending unit still operates, but not showing the right position, would you lean towards adjustment of the sending unit or lean towards just replacing them?  They aren't pegged... just showing about 4 o'clock when all the way down & sometimes (rarely) will show correct position.  Thanks, Dave

If I were servicing the boat, I would remove the outer cover of the sending unit.  4 small screws.  If any signs of rust or corrsion at all, replace with new sending unit.  We just serviced a boat similar to what you have going.  Replace the sending unit and now all is good.  No more bouncing, sticking or eratic movements.  Currently I have been using the Sierra brand sending units,  Less than $100 and more reliable.  Good luck  Al

Al, are there sending units that are easy to install that are digital?  I was just asking because my Smartcraft has the capability (actually my Northstar that is connected to smartcraft) to read the digital on it's display.  i'd really like that and right now one of the gauges isn't reading it anyhow, probably due to the sending unit.

sending the digital display can be accomplished,  The 496 transom assy's have a digital sending unit plus and anolog sending unit.  The Digital is on the port side of the gimble ring and the anolog is on the starboard side..  The Digital unit is run through the wiring harness of the 496's  However they also can go out and corrode.  Nearly 3 times as much money also.  Can it be done, yes. would I recommend no.  Al

Thanks Al, I definitely wouldn't want to pay a bunch just to have it.  I thought maybe there was a slim possiblity the connection was already there, or it would be the same price to replace what I have.

Last year I tried to start a chat night,  it turned out too cumbersome.  But I would be up for it again starting Nov.  Questions keep our minds active and alive.  Al

Al, I was thinking more a of forum category dedicated to you if you are up for it. Members can still blog their questions to all members, however, for those questions which only you may have the answer can be dedicated to the ask the mechanic forum. Maybe other mechanics who are mostly silent on this site can chip in. It would also be a great idea if Rinker actually participated as well. We are all customers here and it would be a great asset to Rinker as well. They don't have to spend money on customer surveys, just ask us. What do you think scratch head
