We run Marine Non-toxic antifreeze through the Generator cooling system, including the muffler.  If you do not use anitfreeze you must drain the muffler or it will crack.
I have repaired several mufflers in the past due to improper winterizing.   Much cheaper to flow the Marine antifreeze through the system.

I always run about 1.5 gallons of antifreeze thru the generator / muffler and then drain the muffler just to make sure no water is in there. It only takes a few minutes to remove the drain plug and only a few minutes for the muffler to drain. Probably over-kill but that "over-kill" lets me sleep without worrying on those -15 degree nights over the winter here in Chicago-land.
