Love my Rinker!

« on: September 18, 2011, 12:09:53 PM »

Ok, so i finally get the boat back from the mechanic and went to launch last weekend and it cranked over a couple of times, sounded like the batter was going dead and then click.  I took the batteries to where i purchased them from and they checked out fine.  I have a 1000 amp starter battery.

Still clicking with the starter not engaging at all.  Started looking around in the engine compartment and found the starter solenoid just on top of the engine block.  Right next to it is a 50 amp circuit breaker. I took a look at it and one of the wires broke clean off (my super powers of deduction tells me that is probably the problem).

I checked for bad grounds or corrosion in the wires, cleaned them up and still nothing.  Checked wires to the starter and they all check out fine.  (what a pain to get to!)

After researching this site for info, i think i isolated it to the solenoid and breaker (broken wire and all) although seloc only shows the solenoid and says nothing about the breaker.

Problem is, I'm having problems find a part number for the breaker and the correct solenoid, the breaker is made by Klixon and is a 50 amp with threaded holes.  I can't imagine they are the only ones who make this breaker to fit the application.  Went to mercruiserpartsexpress and put in my motor serial number and it spits out that the part is no longer available and it doesn't give me a part number for the breaker.

Forgot to mention it's a 2005 350 Mercruiser Horizon Mag MPI, Serial number in the OW300000 series.

If you can imagine my frustration, my wife is pressuring me to sell.  Three weekends in a row with not being able to launch is dancing on my last nerve.  bang head Anyone have this info, it would greatly be appreciated.

I found all the parts from the local boat dealer.  Now it's time to install them.  Hopefully that is the problem and not the actual starter because the back of the boat is just as hard to get to as the front of it.   pray

Ok, so I really need help here.  I changed out the slave solenoid and the 50 amp breaker and still get a clicking noise.  Before i go pulling off the starter and replacing it, is there anything I'm missing?  Is the starter solenoid separate from the starter and can be replaced separately or do they come together?   dont know

Anyone ever hear of water intrusion causing the engine to seize?  I am doing some research and am hoping this is not the cause of the starter not engaging because the engine is locked up.  I hope not! pray

Stavidlin,

Yes water intrusion can happen.  What I have heard is if the flap in the exhaust has gone bad and if you come off a plane quickly the water in the exhaust can actually get pushed back to the engine and hydro-lock the pistons.  To double check this you should pull each of the 8 plugs to see if water comes out.  When the plugs are our see if you can turn the engine.  If it turns then you may have had water intrusion.  Pray this is not the issue.  If water has been in there for some time you may need an overhual....

Good Luck,

LG

Ok, replacing the starter on the 350 Mercruiser Mag MPI isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be.  It took me a total of 1 hour to get it out and put in the new one.  Thankfully I put some lubricant on the bolts 2 days ago to help loosen them up.

Started her up and all is good.  All that is left is the sea trial tomorrow.  Hopefully it goes good.  Last time I had it out I was having problems with overheating due to the impeller being bad.  That turned into a 2 month ordeal with trying to do it myself and then giving up and spending $1500 for a mechanic to put it back on.

Keeping my fingers crossed, taking my vitamins and saying my prayers tonight...Oh Yeah!  Here's to a successful sea trial tomorrow. thumbsup

Unfortunately, i still get the beep of death from my Mercruiser.  Gear fluid level checks out.  Oil, coolant, spark plugs, etc are all good.  Just changed out the impeller (thinking it might be an overheating problem).  The temperature on the gauge reads just over 150 but when i give it gas, it gives me the beeeeeep!  Could it be a bad thermostat?  Is there something I'm missing?  could it be a  bad distributor cap, MAP Sensor, or throttle position sensor?  No telling.

Last time I had a computer hooked up to it,

I got Fault Code 104 - Lake/sea Temp Circuit High.  Code 75 Fuel Level 1 Circuit high, Code 94 Pitot Pressure Circuit Low, code 119 Steering Position Circuit Low, and 130 trim sensor circuit high.  The mechanic said the only one i had to worry about was fault code 104, and that was due to the impeller.

Can it be something as simple as resetting something in the engine?  Appreciate the advice.
