1) Can the water impeller on a volvo be removed while boat is in the water ?
2) Where are they located ?
3) What indications are exhibited to indicate replacement is required?

What drives? 

I have the OSI motors and the impeller is on the front of the crank shaft.  Very easy to change.  Can be done in the water if fast enough.

Have a set of those tapered wood dowels available.  There are two or three sizes in the set.  One of them fits the open end of the hose you will remove perfectly.  You will get almost now water in the bilge.

There are kits with impellers that are sold to complete the insallation.
Work was done and all is well.
