I had the Big Orange filter installed this spring and have had nothing but problems since. First, there was a bad smell from under the port seat where the unit was installed. Also had some odor in the cabin. This past weekend, the cabin smelled awful. When I took the seat cushions off and looked in the storage compart where the Big Orange is, there was at least an inch of waste. Not pleasant at all. We returned to the marina and got pumped out. It looked like it was pretty full. Now my question. Why would the waste exit at the Big Orange and not out the overflow on the side if the tank was full? Is the overflow maybe clogged and how would I check that? Maybe the Big Orange is installed improperly but it looked Ok when they put it in.

Any help would be appreciated.

The filter should be installed on the vent/overflow.

Thanks Raybo.

It is installed on the vent line. Or should I say that I paid someone to install it correctly so I assume it is. Is it normal for the waste to flow out of the filter if I overflow my tank? I guess I just need to change the filter now.

Thanks.

If your waste tank is full then waste will flow out of the vent if you try and pump more into the tank. It would make sense that if it is over flowing then it would flow into the filter. You are definately going to have to clean out and recharge the filter though as you don't want to get water (or liquid) in the filter.

Check the vent tube from the tank to the Big Orange..on my 342 the fitting from the holding tank was not the same diameter as the tube and Rinker just crushed the tube with the worm clamp..I'm sure my in-boat odor was from this.  I put in the correct tube at the tank and used an adapter to go to the larger tube to fit the Big Orange.  Another thing to look at is the tube from the Big Orange to the thru hull vent.  The tube should NOT have a low point for water to plug the tube or allow it to run back to the Big Orange (ideally it loops up from the thru hull and loops down to the Big Orange.

Hope that helps.  I put mine in and it has been flawless and solved ALL my smell issues.
