anyone know if the speedo and depthfinder on a '97 232 Captiva are connected? both are not working (needle doesn't move on the speedo, nothing on the LCD depth finder display)? maybe a fuse or something?

first post, btw.

No they are not.  The speedo is totally mechanical except for the light.  On the back of the speedo gauge, you will find a black hose which is pushed onto a barbed fitting.  The speedo actually reads water pressure and translates the pressure to a MPH reading.
The Depth finder is totally electric.  If you have no reading on the gauge at all.  I would check the fuse which is located behind the gauge itself.  Basic electronic troubleshooting,  Red is positive and black is negitive.  The Gauge also has the trasducer pluged into the back.  The trasducer shoots a signal down at a particular speed, the reflection back, time distance, calculates the depth.  Good luck  Al

My speedo stops on ocassion after I have the drive removed and serviced. There is a little black Pitot tube on the drive really close to the transon with a black 1/4" tube hooked to it, I just put it back in the hole and works great.

thanks to your help, i got back there and found out that the fuse was busted. a .65 cent fix. really appreciate it.

i put my arm down in the water trying to find the pitot, but couldn't. the water here is too murky to see anything so i just felt around. not really sure what i'm looking for though. anyone have a picture or diagram to help me out? can i fix it while it's in the water?

I know there are other posts on her with images. Use the search function or see if anybody has a similar drive you can look at out of the water. You maybe able to use a snorkel and flashlight once you know what your looking for.

I need to splice my pickup line. Does anyone know where I can get a small amount of tubing and a tubing splice?

Napa,  look for a Vacuum line splice, plus some 1/8" vacuum hose.  Al

what does a splice do? (and should i be doing that too?)

unless somebody stops me, i'm planning on disconnecting the tube from behind the speedometer and shooting some compressed air through it to see if it'll blow through/clear out any clogs.

A splice is a method to reconnect two things like a broken hose. Another word to repair a broken hose or a broken wire. If your boat is in the water you may be able to blow air in the speedometer end and look for bubbles near the out drive to diagnose where the end is. I would also advise you to use the search function and type "Library". One of the moderators has tons of videos in there on out-drives. One of the videos shows winterization of a drive and the technician is using a small metal pick to dislodge debris in the pick up in front of the out drive. Maybe your pick up hole is clogged with junk or sand or weeds. The speedometer needle is driven by pressure that water pushes into the tube and it pushes air up the tube, not water. Watch the mercruiser drive video and it will make more sense.
