I have a 2004 232 Captiva.

It has a 75 gallon fuel tank. It seems eveytime I get the fuel down to near empty on the fuel guage and I go to fill up it take 50 gallons to fill it.

Any ideas?

You've got 25 gallons reserve dont know

The float probably isn't able to reach the bottom of the tank.

That is what was happening in my 232. The float was about an inch to short for the tank. When my sending unit went bad, I corrected the problem and it is rather accurate now. I just filled up and it took 65 gallons, and it was on empty. I was happy to know that it is reading better.

Are you saying you had the wrong sender?

It was put in by Rinker. I am not sure if it was the wrong one. When I measured for the new one and compared it to the old one, the old one was short. I am glad that it reads better now, but it costs more money to fill up.

I am being told by Skipper Buds that it is either the sender or the gauge, there is nothing for adjusting or tweaking.

It is up to you, but I would rather have a "reserve" of fuel.  Than a limited amount.  Remember the fuel pick up is also about 3/4" off of the bottom of the tank.  Good luck  Al

Al, good point about the fuel pickup.

Slightly off topic but not much, for a 342, is it up by the same amount?  And do you know how tall the 342 tanks are?

I have heard of this happening.  Boat, low on fuel is planing along just fine but when it was brought down to trawler speed, the engines quit.  I imagine the pickups were at the rear of his tanks.  I imagine that would be the case for any boat where the tanks are forward of the engines.

Yes, all of the tanks built by Florida Marine Tank where to have the fuel pick up 3/4" from the bottom.  Al

I sent an email to both Florida Marine Tanks and Rinker (Nautiboats) asking for dimensions and maybe drawings for the tanks used in the 342.

If I am able to obtain this info it will help me understand when I am at the bottom of the useable fuel.  Not that I plan to go to that point but once I put in 172 gallons (as I remember it) after an 18 hour trip from Key West to home dock @ Palmetto (just south of Tampa.)  6 hours on plane and 12 hours at trawler speed.

I asked Rinker for the part number for my tank which they say is FMT-76-RKB

Now I am going to see if I can get more info.
