Clicking/ticking noise in engine compartment

Hi Group!
Im a newby and and I own a 2000 270. Im the second owner and keep it at Alexandra Yacht Club in Toronto. I have a problem with a ticking noice coming from the engine compartment as I throttle above 2000 rpm? The noise is not there if the boat is in neutral or at slow cruising speed. But as soon as you try to speed up it starts and increase with speed. I have been told it maybe the flappers that keep back water from the engine? Is there anyone who has had this problem and if so how difficult is the repair?
Thanks

Very well could be the flappers. I had that problem on a Chaparral years ago and thought it was a lifter in the engine.

Had something similar last year, drove me crazy, checked all the simple stuff first, belt, etc.
Didn't make a connection when my co2 monitor alarmed a few times in the head. My dealer found an exhaust leak, I believe at the manifold, not sure where;when winterizing the boat. Merc covered it under warranty, so I was lucky.fyi
