I have a 2000 Captiva 272 bowrider with the 7.4L mated to a Bravo III outdrive. The boat is kept on a lift in fresh water year round. I have the drive pulled every other year for standard maintenance. Recently, the outdrive oil reservoir tank has been emptying. It seems to be doing it more at rest then when in use. It takes approximately 2 weeks for the oil reservoir to go completely dry. There is no sign of oil in the bilge and there is no oil sheen in the water while the boat sits on the lift, or when I drop it into the water. I have had the mechanics look at the drive on multiple occasions. They have pressure tested the unit, emptied the system of oil and refilled it from the bottom to ensure all of the air is purged and recently, they installed new prop shaft seals. Nothing seems to correct the problem. There doesn't appear to be any water in the oil.
Any thoughts wold be appreciated.

Welcome. At $17/quart you could be getting hijacked ! I was losing mine as well on my BIII but it was leaking into the bilge. Bad re-connection of the hose from my mechanic last year. Keep us posted. interesting...

I was going to say that you never had it full and the air would work it's way up. Since your tech filled it from the bottom that kinda eliminates that theroy. I had a leaky tank on my old Scarab but it leaked on the exhaust and ran down inside on the engine. check that.

How did the old oil look? You might be cooking it internally, which is bad in many respects. I added drive showers to my BIII outdrives this year like a lot of others. Might be worth a shot.
The oil has to be going somewhere....

okay, i've owned my bravo III for nearly 10 years now and had this problem. After the mechanic replaced the outdrive and it STILL did it, he tried to charge me another $75 to replace the T fitting that connects the hose to another hose in the gimbal area. Have your guy check that fitting. My insurance company got soaked for a new drive just to find out it was the darned fitting!

Might depend on the insurance company but I have State Farm and they told me they cover everything.
Even people who do not properly winterize there engine.
I know this idiot who was going full throttle down a river and tore the drive off of his boat and damaged the engine when he hit a sand bar, let along the transon damage and State Farm paid to fix it.

I have State Farm, they didn't question it. and like the other guys have said the coverage tends to pay for just about anything. I boat on the Mississippi and wouldn't leave the dock without it.

Did you look in the bellows for oil? The upper seal may have a leak and the oil is collecting in the bellow.

Mine does the same thing and has for awhile now. I mentioned it to my service manager and he took a look at it, found nothing wrong and explained it as "probably" a case of the outdrive having air in it above the point at which lube goes into the outdrive. When operating, this air bubble is replaced by lube from the reservoir. He certainly knows more about it than I do, so I guess everythings ok. I just make sure and check it often and I always carry extra lube onboard just in case.
