Had a nice Fri-Sun trip to one of our favorite places, the national park at Ängsö about 45 minutes from our dock. No facilities, just the dock, rest huts and a place for BBQs but in gorgeous surroundings. As I am not into flowers, the pictures of the reason it is a national park - beautiful meadows with lots of rare flowers - are in the Admiral's camera. My camera was left at home so the trusty iPhone took these.  smiley

Politby,

Gorgeous photos of gorgeous country.  It puts me in mind of parts of the Trent-Severn and Georgian Bay in Canada during our recent trip.

And I like your table in your stern cockpit area.

Quite right, other than Finland, Canada is pretty much the only place where you will find larger areas like this.

The table is nice but a little too wide for the narrow (one of my few gripes with the 342, Rinker should have put in U shaped seating) seating area aft. Am replacing it with one like this:

The table is called "EUDE Nautic Star Slide" - here's a link to the manufacturer's home page:

While I am at it, here are a few more photos.

Beautiful but I would go nuts thinking that I might hit submerged rock!  How do you navigate around there?

Not for the faint of heart. One way to stay out of trouble is to stick to the shipping lanes as most (but not all) obstructions close to shipping lanes have markers. But that would defeat the purpose of boating here as shipping lanes are for commercial traffic, not leisure boaters, so they won't help you get to the best restaurants, secluded anchorages, or most beautiful  areas.

So:

  • Know EXACTLY where you are at all times,
  • Make sure you have updated charts,
  • When in any unfamiliar area, go SLOW and have a lookout stationed at the bow.

The area is pretty well charted with detailed charts of high quality and most rocks and obstructions are visible on the charts. Here is an example - the little inlet on the north side of the large island is a great spot with guest docks and a nice restaurant. Depths are in meters not feet   grin

The only safe approach is from the north and it helps to know what you are doing. The last photo in the second set of pictures above was taken in the direction of the red arrow in the chart below.

Edit: I should have started the thread in the "Pictures" section, sorry. Will be sure to do it right the next time.

On the subject of difficult navigation, I got the following photos from a friend of mine who takes his Donzi 28ZX everywhere. Takes some big cajones to go into this place:

Place called "Grönskär" - if you make it to the little dock where his Donzi is moored, it is actually quite deep. Not a place to go unless the conditions are ideal. If the weather deteriorates while one is ashore, better prepare to be stuck until the conditions improve.

I am planning to go there in August with the 342, at that time weather conditions are usually ideal.

Awesome shots. Yes it looks very much like Georgian Bay if I didn't know any better. Georgian Bay also has many beautiful dangerous places as well. Thanks for sharing.  thumbsup
