transom door latch
«

Hello,
I need a transom door latch for a 2003 342 fiesta. I broke the bolt latch in two when I forgot to keep the door shut while raising the engine hatch. Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!
Where can I purchase one? Are there any used ones out there?
Thanks,
Dakota Skipper

Dakota,
First, welcome to the the RBO and also to the busted latch club. The busted latch club has many members, including myself.
I believe the latch is made by Perko and it is available from West Marine. In the morning I will get aboard our boat and get you the part number off of the spare I carry if nobody has responded with the part number by then.
But here is what I do. I bought a piece of dowel stock that matches the diameter of the bolt and cut off a piece that is the same length. Then I put a small screw in it where the lift tab should be. And I notch it where it would break off if the hatch is lifted with the door still closed. This works just fine.
Looks ugly but it sure is cheaper that replacing with a new store bought latch every time. I keep a spare store bought latch aboard but I don't know exactly why.

My 5 year old niece broke mine by sitting on the door. West Marine $40.00.

Yep, it's a rite of passage in the RBO club! I did it twice! I now use 3/8 dowel stock and spray it sliver just like Tony said!!!
Good luck in this exclusive club that I was so taken in, I had to go through more than once.

Osead, I gotta get a can of silver spray paint. These things do need to look right!
And for Dakota, the cat number of the Perko Barrel Bolt is 0947DP2CHR. This is the short one. (4 5/16 x 1 7/16) There is a longer one. My transom door is drilled for both.

Hi Tony,
Yep, I agree. Came to the same solution as you. Used a dowel and a small screw, rounded the edges, sprayed it with Rustoleum silver, and it looks good, still! Its gone through 2 seasons already and no one has seen the difference from the original, at least not yet!

I did the same within 20m of owning the boat... Had no idea what happened until i investigated. Let's say the pucker factor was high when I heard the crack. Easy fix. WM has them in stock and takes about 5 m to replace. Good luck

I just joined the club this weekend. Am now on the search for a replacement. The WM closest to me only had very small barrelbolt latches. I'll check another one near the lake, but I like the painted dowel rod idea too. Anything will look better than that bungie cord !!

Tony, I messed up and ordered the 0947DP3CHR [I saw if on another post somewhere]. When I look at the catalog that came with the part, it says the DP2 is a 3" long bolt. The one I broke is 3-1/2" long. Now I'm worried that the Perko DP2 might not be an exact fit for my 2011 Rinker 260EC.
Is there any way to get a spec or partnumber directly from Rinker to be sure ?

Yes, you should be able to call Rinker directly @ 574.522.8381 or @ NauticGlobalGroup.com. My choice would be to call. You will be put right thru to parts where there is a person who will give you good customer service. I can not think of her name.
I am not at the boat so I am away from my papers and records that would have more info.
But you should be good to go with the phone call.
